Mission
The missionary vision came from the heart of the founder Pastor DJ Findlay who initially applied to go to China as a missionary. However Hudson Taylor, founder of the China Inland Mission, was of the opinion that Findlay could serve the Lord more effectively by staying at home and sending others out. Accordingly 12 missionaries went out to China from the Fellowship even before the "Tabernacle" was opened and a total of 56 sent out to various parts of the world during the Pastor’s life time. Now almost 100 missionaries in total have gone out over the life of the Church.
The Challenge of Mission
In Matthew 28, v18 - 20 Jesus issues an imperative to the eleven disciples gathered on the mountain at Galilee “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
As we read, Jesus does not give us the choice as to whether or not to make disciples of all nations. He instructs us to go! He challenges us to take up His mission that others may know Him as their personal Saviour. He tells us that if we go in His name people will be saved if they obey Jesus’ teachings which come directly from the Father.
If the longing of our heart is that family, friends, colleagues, neighbours and all the many other people we meet in our lives will come to know Jesus and the power of His resurrection, are we merely bystanders in mission or are we taking part? Is it our hearts desire that on the last day we shall see our loved ones worshipping at the throne of grace? Do we long to see those in distant lands or on the street corner saved or is that a task for someone else? Are we prepared to get our sleeves rolled up and play our part or will we sit this one out?
1 Corinthians 12, v12 - 31 reminds us that we are all part of the one body which is made up of many parts. Each of those parts has a role to play in building the Kingdom of God on Earth. If you don’t play your part who will? If you don’t exercise your God-given gifts and talents who will? If you don’t tell your neighbour or colleague about the love that the Father has for each one of us then who will? What if nobody had ever taken up the challenge of mission? Would you know Jesus as your personal Saviour?
Will you take up the challenge of mission to serve God in St. George’s Cross or Stirling, Brasil or Botswana, the Middle East or Milton? Remember that Jesus did not ask if you might – but commanded that each one of us must!
